Dynamics NAV with Power BI

I spoke recently of using NAV with Power BI, currently this topic (NAV integration with Power BI) is current and widely discussed, many questions about “How-to” integrate new and old releases on NAV with Power BI. I have collected a series of posts videos on Power BI and about integration with NAV (the most interesting that I fond).

As more facilities adopt new tech, productivity comes into focus

With more warehouses and factories beginning to use the latest technology for some parts of their processes, the opportunity to take use those options to their utmost potential becomes increasingly important. Due to the fact that these changes typically require sizable investments, the ability of any executive to wring out every dollar of added efficiency will only increase the company's success. When crafting such a plan, though, businesses should take a holistic view of the shop floor.

There are many ways in which warehouse or manufacturing decision-makers can increase the overall efficiency of their facilities, even before they pour money into more costly investments, according to Ground Report. For instance, having the latest safety equipment, and the necessary training that goes with it can help to avoid workplace accidents. When every worker is healthy and happy, it ensures a better working environment more conducive to long-term success.

Other low-tech moves
Additional investments can pay off well here too, including new storage lockers or other shelving units that make more efficient use of space and potentially free up plenty of cubic footage that can be devoted to other aspects of the overall operation. potentially saving money if companies feel they need to expand or move to new facilities. Moreover, finding ways to cut costs related to electricity, heating, and cooling can likewise be a smart investment that frees up money.

Investing for the future
That extra cash may be best put toward the new technology many facilities need to get ahead, including scanning apps that work with warehouse management systems to increase efficiency and oversight. With even a few changes made to inventory control procedures, factories and warehouses can free up time and money, according to Automation World. This is especially true as more machines on the warehouse floor gain capabilities to connect to the Internet of Things and integrate with existing and emerging WMS platforms.

"The e-commerce boom and growing consumer expectations have put a spotlight on operational inefficiencies and disconnects," John Waldron, president and CEO and Honeywell SPS, said on a recent online broadcast, according to the Automation World. "To stay competitive, businesses need to deploy the Internet of Things, cloud solutions and automation throughout their supply chains."

Factories and warehouses are better off when the devices they deploy ensure better performance across all operations. That may soon become increasingly easier to achieve, simply because of the many options for manufacturing and warehouse efficiency starting to catch on, including augmented reality, according to the Harvard Business Review.

Industrial applications for AR are manifold. Smart glasses, for example, could show users critical information about inventories just by looking at them or pull up step-by-step instructions for when machines on the shop floor need to be fixed or products need assembly. The latter may be crucial for on-the-job training, which itself will be critical to filling the millions of open advanced manufacturing expected to emerge in the industry in the years ahead.

In general, the more warehouse or factory executives can do to ensure they know all their options for increasing efficiency, and how to proceed next, the better off they'll be when it comes to meeting their most pressing needs. That kind of investigation should include how well these systems will integrate with their current or potential future WMS platforms.

How to Run Objects from Dynamics NAV Classic Client

Running Objects from Dynamics NAV Classic ClientHow to run objects from Microsoft Dynamics NAV Classic Client

In RTC (Role Tailored Client versions of Dynamics NAV (2013 and above), the Classic Client is still available, but, it is now called the Development Environment. It can be opened by running finsql.exe typically located here:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Dynamics NAV\90\RoleTailored Client\finsql.exe

Once opened, it will look similar to the old Classic Client; however, you do not open companies from here. You can only open databases. Once the DB is opened, you can view the objects using the Object Designer. Open the Object Designer just like the old Classic Client: Tools/Object Designer.

Selecting the object designer to view the Dynamics NAV Classic Client
Figure 1 - Selecting the Object Designer

You can run reports, tables, pages and codeunits from here. But, it is best practice to run these from the RTC client. Anything you run from the Object Designer will actually run in the RTC client. Even the tables will open in a pseudo-temp list style page with all the fields displayed.

Common Data Service (CDS) promises to touch all areas of the Microsoft Dynamics 365 product suite. Eventually. As we heard from Greg Williams in his report from the Dynamics 365 (Operations) Tech Conference, CDS was a key topic at that much-anticipated conference. And judging by similar CDS messaging at eXtreme365 Lisbon last week, Microsoft is betting heavily on its promise for business solutions, including ERP and CRM.

At eXtreme365, the arrival of CDS - and Microsoft's overall commitment to prioritizing integration needs of Dynamics 365 CRM customers - were put front an...

Benefits of a Data Warehouse for Hybrid Cloud Data Management

This article will explore data warehouses (DWs) when associated with cloud- and on-premise data sources.

Have you watched Buzzfeed’s Tasty food videos? The videos typically begin with a default still of the finished meal, then give the viewers a step-by-step tutorial of the ingredients and measurements that go into the recipe. In comparison, a data warehouse (DW), a platform where all of your important data sits, can be seen as the final dish and the ingredients can be interpreted as the different data sources that make up the recipe, in this case, the analysis. Just as ingredients come from different locations, data sources come from different places.

Cloud – Organizations are moving to the cloud. As mentioned in previous articles, the cloud is continuously evolving and its usage is rising. On-premise users do not have to worry because, as cloud BI tools continue to get smarter, it is likely that hybrid models will appear in the marketplace. A data warehouse (DW) is able to consolidate all your data sources no matter where they are located in the cloud, web, or on-premises.

Data Warehouse – Informatica defines a DW as a “technology that aggregates structured data from one or more sources so that it can be compared and analyzed for greater business intelligence (BI).” Consolidating for organizations with several entities has never been easier as it is stored in one location. It is organized with business user accessibility at the center of design, and the information housed within DWs can be used for periodical reporting, planning, forecasting, and modeling, as well as in dashboards or graphical scorecards where trends and trajectories of organizational data can be analyzed visually.

Data sources – A data source can be a database, a spreadsheet, a dataset, or even hard-coded data within- or outside your organization. DWs bring multiple data sources together and house a wide array of data types, whether your data is on-premise or cloud-based, and improve budgets, data visualizations, and financial reporting capabilities. The DW is a singular database for aggregation of your separate data sources, clarifying and enriching your analyses.

You know you need a DW if you begin to feel like you’re wasting time due to manual documentation, in addition to analyzing and managing data with a program like Microsoft Excel, DWs can help eliminate errors, tedious manual documentation as well as wasted time and money. This will truly help your organization be on the right track this year and guide the decisions for where to begin. You can find more information about DWs in this article about preparing for your first DW implementation.

Directions ASIA and NAVUG Summit EMEA

It’s not conference season and yet .. I have never been this busy during this part of the year for conferences. That must mean that new stuff (conferences that is..) is coming up. Let’s spend a very short blogpost on what’s coming up for me..

Directions ASIA

In fact, at this very moment, I’m on the plane to Bangkok. The EMEA team is organizing its event for the first time in ASIA. I don’t know at all what the experience is going to be like – but I’m looking forward to it! It’s also the first time that I will be traveling for 30 hours, with a 6-hour time difference .. for only being there for 72-hours. Let’s just hope Mr. Migraine stays home ;-).

Anyway – I was asked to do some sessions – so who am I to refuse this wonderful opportunity ;-).

My Sessions

The sessions (and workshop) are quite the same as I did for Directions EMEA and US:

  • My First Extension
  • Bad habits of NAV developers
  • Building Extensions with PowerShell (workshop)

After the sessions in US and EMEA, I should be able to do these with two fingers in my nose (which I don’t know this is a valid English expression – but you know what I mean (no literally ;-))).

NAVUG Summit EMEA

And there will be NAVUG Summit EMEA in two weeks. This is going to be a whole different concept and experience for me. NAVUG is a “User Group” – so focus is not ISVs or Partners, but customers! A whole different set of questions, interests, focus, … . This is going to be interesting. I just hope I will be able to fill the expectations with my two sessions:

  • Are Extensions the future of Dynamics NAV? – I will be co-presenting this one with Mark Brummel
  • PowerShell: Keep Calm and Script On

Dynamics NAV Coffee Break: How to Correct and Print 1099 Tax FormsHow To Correct and Print 1099 Tax Forms in Microsoft Dynamics NAV ERP

It happens all the time, you didn’t realize a customer was a 1099 vendor, or their vendor card wasn’t set up properly from the beginning; fortunately, it is fairly simple to correct and print a 1099 tax form in Dynamics NAV. This video provides an overview on correcting and printing 1099 tax forms in Dynamics NAV. Gwen demonstrates how to ensure a vendor has a 1099 code in their vendor card, how to update ledger entries, indicate if a vendor and/or transaction is 1099 liable, and how to print out the 1099 once complete.

You can view this video and many other video tutorials for Dynamics NAV at ArcherPoint's YouTube Channel

For your convenience, the video transcript for correcting and printing 1099 tax forms in Microsoft Dynamics NAV ERP follows:

All right. Today’s coffee break is on correcting and printing 1099s. As we all know, we get to the beginning of the year. We get ready to issue our 1099s and we realize that we have not been collecting 1099 information for a given vendor and we need to make some corrections, so that we can prevent the 1099.

It’s not uncommon. Either you didn’t know they were a 1099 vendor or that you weren’t set up properly. It doesn’t really matter. It fits this bill the same. So what you do is you go to the vendor card first. So I go to Departments and I’m going to go ahead and go to Purchases, Planning and open up my vendors.

So the first thing we want to do is look at the vendor’s card and make sure that there is an IRS 1099 code established. All right? So if there isn’t one, you can go ahead and put it in there or if there is one, great. Maybe the transactions just weren’t flagged as 1099 transactions.

So once that has been confirmed, you’re going to go to their ledger entries. So I’m going to go up here to History and click on the ledger entries and I have all the invoices and payments for this particular vendor and they are not showing up when I print my 1099s. So I need to edit these entries to show both of their 1099 – that they have a 1099 code and that there is the 1099 amount. So I’m going to right click and go to Choose Columns and I want to see two columns. One is the 1099 amount. I’m going to add that and the other is the 1099 code. So I will add that as well.

I’m going to go ahead and move these up, just to make it easier for us to work. All right. I click OK. And it’s just going to rebuild that screen, so that I can see those two columns. So as you see, all these invoices do not have a 1099 code and they don’t have a 1099 amount. So what we want to do is just go ahead and edit this list and what you do is you put in here the amounts.

Now remember, this is a vendor’s invoice. So the amount is going to be negative just like it was originally. So I just put in the original amount. One thing to note while I’m doing this is that the entire invoice may not have been 1099-liable. So in other words, maybe we got a service from this vendor and that is 1099-liable, but maybe there were some paths through cost that would not fall into that category and this 1099 amount doesn’t necessarily need to be the same nor should it be the same as the original amount of the invoice.

I just realized I made a mistake. Let me fix that. So in this case, I’m just going to go ahead and put in the same amount as the original invoice. But I want you to know there’s some flexibility there. So once that’s done, I just need to select the code that is appropriate for this vendor and I’m going to choose the non-employee compensation code and I’m just going to go down the list and do the same thing.

OK. One other thing that you need to know is that if an invoice has not yet been paid, it’s not going to show up in your – on your 1099 form. So you should still go ahead and put the amounts and the codes in here because it will make a difference in the future once this is paid.

But just know that you’re not expecting to see that amount on the actual 1099 form. So you will just go down the list and you will update each of the invoices. It’s a little tedious. But it’s not the end of the world. You usually don’t have that many. Make sure that you put in the code on each of them and lastly, we will go ahead and put this one in.

All right. So now that I’ve done that, I can go ahead and get out of the screen. I’m clicking OK and I can print my 1099 reports. So if I click up here on report for this vendor card and I go to 1099 – Vendor 1099 Miscellaneous and I put in my calendar year. I can go ahead and print them right from here, right?

So that’s it. It really is that easy and you can also – prior to printing the actual forms, you can go into Vendor 1099 Information and go ahead and preview that report and that will show you all the different forms and the amounts that you should expect to see when you print the 1099s. That’s it! That concludes our lesson on correcting and printing your 1099s.

Five considerations for evaluating a Microsoft Dynamics NAV upgrade

$
0
0

In my experience, well more than half of Microsoft Dynamics NAV users continue to run old versions of the software. Many still rely on NAV software that is more than five versions old!

Dynamics NAV has delivered powerful business and operational benefits throughout its evolution; and upgrading to Dynamics NAV 2017 takes performance, functionality, agility and interoperability to new levels. Too many Dynamics NAV customers are missing out on the real benefits of upgrading to Dynamics NAV in today's cloud-based environment.

It is very important to bear in mind that when we talk about a NAV upgrade from versions older than NAV 2009, each case must be analyzed carefully. In our experience, when a list of customizations is not used anymore, or those cust...

WMS systems already evolving to the next generation

$
0
0

In recent years, many logistics and manufacturing executives took the leap to next-generation warehouse management systems and reaped significant rewards for doing so. As these platforms and the data they collect move to the cloud, allowing for far fewer concerns among both developers and everyday users, attentions turn to different aspects of how WMS can help companies get ahead. Decision-makers should consider their current options for upgrading, as well as what those choices might present for them in the future.

One of the biggest changes over the past several years in this regard has been an increasing focus on developers to make sure WMS platforms actually help businesses get a better handle on their processes. In this way, companies know what to streamline and how best to do it, according to a report from Logistics Management. Companies are adding new features to long-standing WMS standards to ensure the best possible functionality to keep up with modern needs.

"WMS was basically a transactional processing engine… there wasn't a lot of 'management' in it at all," Dwight Klappich, vice president of research at Gartner, told the publication. "The software application basically focused on picking a box and then putting it away, and there wasn't a lot of intelligence embedded in the platforms."

The next big things
When it comes to what developers aim to build in their new WMS offerings, among them is the ability to not only see what's happening within a facility at any given time, but also what is likely to happen in the future. The more companies can use their current data to plan their next week, month, or year, the better off their efforts are likely to be. These programs are also now designed to be used in conjunction with other crucial software. This way, all aspects of a company's operations can be assessed and made more efficient from within the WMS.

As companies begin to store more data thanks to their next-gen WMS software, they cultivate knowledge and better decisions about their business, according to the Asset Servicing Times. A recent poll of data managers at an industry forum in London found that 43 percent of respondents said the biggest benefit of centralized data is it ensures high quality and low repetition. Another 29 percent said it allowed their companies to better utilize the data, and 18 percent said it gave them greater flexibility in dealing with data-related challenges they might encounter. Finally, 11 percent said they believe collecting data in this manner gives them better governance over it all.

The role of e-commerce
Today the biggest driver of change for how logistics or manufacturing businesses operate is likely e-commerce and the ever-shifting demands that come with order fulfillment, according to a separate Logistics Management report. At this point, the need for companies to constantly evaluate their requirements when it comes to handling the supply chain is massive, and choosing the right WMS platform is a vital part of achieving all future goals.

With all this in mind, the more logistics or manufacturing executives can do to carefully assess what their current WMS provides, and what it doesn't, will help inform the best possible decisions about where a company can go next. That can also help them understand how best to get there.
